Hideo Kojima (and the Internet) Can’t Get Enough of the Fall’s Best New Show

DAN DA DAN

I remain fervently committed to getting more horror fans into anime. I’ve written about some of the best genre-bending shows around, including Final Destination riff Another, and paranoid summer slasher Higurashi: When They Cry (my personal favorite). Junji Ito fans are no doubt thrilled with the long-anticipated release of Uzumaki: Spiral Into Horror, even if the scariest thing about it might be the stark difference in quality between the first two episodes. But there’s another late 2024 release that deserves your attention whether you’re an anime fan or not. It’s got Hideo Kojima hooked, and it will no doubt sink its paranormal claws into you soon. I’m talking about online sensation DAN DA DAN.

Per Crunchyroll: When high schooler Momo, from a family of spirit mediums, first meets her classmate Okarun, an occult geek, they argue—Momo believes in ghosts but denies aliens, and Okarun believes in aliens but denies ghosts. When it turns out both phenomena are real, Momo awakens a hidden power and Okarun gains the power of a curse. Together, they must challenge the paranormal forces threatening their world.

DAN DA DAN, streaming on Netflix and Crunchyroll in both a dubbed and subbed version, has taken the internet by storm. The new series is adapted from Yukinobu Tatsu’s serialized shonen series of the same name, which began in 2021. It’s hard to convey what the show is really about, but just trust that once you start, you’ll be hooked.

DAN DA DAN boasts plenty of heart and supernatural chaos alongside some truly stellar animation from studio Science Saru. In a genre scene drowning in self-seriousness, it’s more than refreshing to see a property have some fun with the tropes we all know and love. Even Hideo Kojima can’t seem to get enough of the show, saying the series, “really hit home.”

Elsewhere, anime fans have been eating the series up. DAN DA DAN is funny, weird, visually arresting, and just plain fun. It’s no doubt one of the best new things of the year, and even if you have just a passing interest in anime, I would encourage you to check it out.

What do you think? Any plans to check out DAN DA DAN? If you do, definitely let me know what you thought over on Twitter @Chadiscollins. In the meantime, I’ll be listening to the theme song on repeat.
