‘Scream’ Star Matthew Lillard Thinks Stu Macher Is “Definitely Alive”
Matthew Lillard is the definition of a gem. He wormed his way into our hearts by playing roles in iconic films such as SLC Punk, Scream, Scooby Doo, the list goes on. And he doesn’t show any sign of slowing down, between appearing in Five Nights At Freddy’s and co-hosting a killer baking show. Luckily, he took some time off from his myriad of spooky obligations to appear on The Drew Barrymore Show to talk about Scream and the ever-questioned fate of his character, Stu Macher.
In case you need a refresher, Lillard played Stu Macher in director Wes Craven and writer Kevin Williamson’s 1996 meta-slasher Scream, a film that changed the horror landscape. Macher was one of the two killers who donned the Ghostface mask and murdered with reckless abandon. He and his best buddy Billy Loomis (Skeet Ulrich) decided to terrorize Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) and her friends until they met a supposed bloody end. Well, at least Billy did.
But Stu’s fate is a much bigger question mark. Fans have speculated about his return with each new sequel and with the upcoming Scream 7, the rumors have started up again. So, after surprising Drew Barrymore on her talk show, Lillard took a few minutes to share his own theories about the fate of the iconic killer.

After jokingly discussing the possibility of Drew’s character still being alive and coming back, Lillard declares that Stu is “definitely alive”. Co-host Russell Mathews asked if Lillard would ever return to Scream at Stu Macher. He said, “I would love it! If it made sense for the franchise, if Kevin [Williamson] liked it, then sure. Obviously.”
Mathews followed up with, “Would you do it?” to which Lillard sheepishly replied, “I’m very slutty.”
While we don’t know much about Scream 7 yet, we would love to see Lillard back in the cast. We’d also love to see how Williamson could possibly write Macher back into the script (if he’s game for such an idea). Until we learn more, we’ll keep daydreaming about Lillard’s return to the franchise.
