The #1 Movie on Netflix Is a Chilling Thriller Based on Shocking True Crimes
I like to see actors pivot to directing. I think being accustomed to appearing in front of the camera lends an extra layer of insight that a director who has never acted sometimes lacks. Anna Kendrick recently made the transition and it seems that extra perspective has served her well. Her directorial debut, Woman of the Hour, is garnering mostly favorable reviews and currently claims the top spot on the Netflix charts. Three cheers for that!
A shocking true crime spree inspired this chilling feature.
The picture is based (in part) on real-life killer Rodney Alcala, who infamously appeared on The Dating Game in 1978 after previously having claimed the lives of at least five victims. Although Alcala is a pivotal part of the narrative, he isn’t the central focus. That’s one aspect of the film critics are connecting with. Some have praised Kendrick and screenwriter Ian McDonald for not making the killer the central focus of the piece and instead framing the narrative through the perspective of contestant Cheryl Bradshaw (played by Kendrick). Critics have also taken care to praise Kendrick’s direction and the thematic elements explored within.
It’s a pleasant surprise to see a filmmaker subverting convention and framing the narrative around someone other than the killer. We have seen countless true crime docs, narrative features, and scripted series that delve into the minds of killers. But rarely do we see the story unfold from the perspective of an innocent.
I have yet to check this one out, but I love the way the trailer and marketing materials recapture the ‘70s aesthetic. So, I have Woman of the Hour on my radar for eventual viewing.
If you are itching to check out Woman of the Hour, head over to Netflix to stream the picture and see exactly what critics are talking about.
The plot crunch for this chilling Netflix original goes like this:
In 1970s Los Angeles, as a wave of murders makes headlines, a young woman aspiring to become an actress and a serial killer cross paths during an episode of a dating show.
