Netflix Now Has the Shocking Road Rage Thriller Quentin Tarantino Recommends
2020 was a tough year for everyone, Quentin Tarantino included. The decorated director was not particularly impressed with the cinematic offerings that bowed during the height of the Covid pandemic. However, the output of that year wasn’t a total bust for him. When the Kill Bill helmer sat down with The Big Picture to discuss the novelization of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, he named two films that he would have paid to see in theaters in 2020.
“The only two movies that came out last year that I would have paid to see in a movie theater were Freaky and that Russell Crowe movie Unhinged.”
2020 was surely a challenging year for the cinematic experience. But it’s nice to see that Tarantino connected with a couple of pictures that bowed during that time period, including an intense Russel Crowe thriller. If his affinity for Unhinged has you curious to check out the film, head over to Netflix where the flick is currently streaming.
In addition to Russell Crowe, Unhinged also stars Caren Pistorius, Gabriel Bateman, Jimmi Simpson, and Austin P. McKenzie. The flick features a small core cast, which keeps the proceedings reined in and focused on the action.
Derrick Borte directed the picture from a screenplay by Carl Ellsworth. Ellsworth will likely be familiar to horror fans for penning the script for Red Eye and co-writing the chilling Last House on the Left remake.
Knowing the screenplay for Unhinged was written by a scribe with horror cred makes sense. The flick sees Russell Crowe stalking his prey very much like a monster out of a slasher picture. The level of violence isn’t on par with your typical horror fare, but the tenacity of the central antagonist certainly leans in that direction.
This Tarantino-approved thriller plays out like this:
Rachel is a single mother whose bad day gets even worse when she beeps her horn at a fellow driver during rush-hour traffic. After an exchange of words, she soon realizes that the mysterious man is following her and her young son in his truck. The initial case of road rage quickly escalates into full-blown terror as Rachel discovers the psychopath’s sinister plan for revenge.
