This Seasonal Splatter-Fest Is the #1 Movie on Hulu

Carved

A Halloween-themed slasher is currently owning the Hulu charts. It’s a silly, funny, and brutal good time. I’m speaking of director Justin Harding’s Carved. I checked this one out earlier this week and I couldn’t help but draw comparisons to Sam Raimi. Harding gleefully pairs ultra-violence and slapstick comedy in a manner that calls to mind the Evil Dead director’s early career output.

Carved may not function at the same level as some of its inspirations, but the film nonetheless makes for an undeniably fun time that never takes itself too seriously. I mean, we’re talking about a mutant killer pumpkin on a revenge spree here. It’s a physical impossibility not to have fun with such an outrageous premise. Right? Well, maybe that’s a slight overstatement. The critical and user reviews I’ve seen have been somewhat mixed so far. But I think anyone who enjoys a silly romp that pays tribute to ‘80s genre content will find plenty to love about Carved. I know I certainly did.

The setup for this Hulu original effort goes as follows:

On Halloween 1993, two years after a deadly nuclear spill, the staff of a historic pioneer village attraction must work together to survive the attack of a monstrous killer pumpkin set on revenge.

I was quite taken with the way the picture excels as both a horror film and a comedy. The two genres aren’t always easy to meld. They are two very different conceits. But Harding manages to merge them with ease. The film is funny and scary in equal measure, and it occasionally delivers chuckles and chills at the very same time.

Director Justin Harding penned the script for this wacky effort with Cheryl Meyer. The picture features an ensemble cast with a couple of names you may recognize. The lineup includes Peyton Elizabeth Lee, Corey Fogelmanis, Carla Jimenez, Elvis Nolasco, Jonah Lees, and DJ Qualls.

If my appreciation for this schlocky flick has you anxious to see what I’m chirping about, head right over to Hulu and give it a whirl.
