‘Rita’ Trailer: Jayro Bustamante Is Back To Shatter Your Heart
Director Jayro Bustamante is skilled in melding genres to craft heart-wrenching narratives. His third feature film La Llorona (2019) melds horror and political drama into a gorgeously terrifying story about politicians facing consequences for their actions. Now, Bustamante is tackling another Guatemalan tragedy with his latest film Rita, which is coming soon to Shudder!
In the film:
While fleeing a neglectful household, thirteen-year-old Rita is placed in an oppressive state-run orphanage. Rita’s arrival provides a glimmer of hope to the girls inside, who share a prophecy that an angel will appear to release them. Encouraged by one another, the girls plan an escape to claim their freedom and expose the orphanage’s abuses of power.

Based on the true story behind one of Guatemala’s most harrowing tragedies, Rita shines a light on the brave orphans whose fight for survival inspired a nationwide outcry for justice and reform. This is Bustamante’s fourth feature and like the rest of his filmography, Rita further proves he isn’t afraid to confront Guatemala’s troubled past, filtered through a genre lens.
Giuliana Santa Cruz, Alejandra Vasquez, Ángela Quevedo, Isabel Aldana, Sabrina De La Hoz, Margarita Kénefic and Maria Telón star in Bustamante’s latest film.
