‘Skinamarink’ Director Kyle Edward Ball To Make New Horror Movie With A24

Skinamarink canadian horror 2023

Since its release almost two years ago, Skinamarink has haunted the nightmares and shadowy hallways of those brave enough to venture into the cursed home of Kyle Edward Ball’s stunning feature film debut. Now, Ball’s gearing up to make his second film, this time with indie production darling A24.

Variety reported exclusively earlier today that the film is titled The Land Of Nod and Ball will write and direct the film. No plot details yet, but in 2022, Ball teased two ideas for future projects while speaking with Variety.

One is a take on the Pied Piper legend, a tale about a man with a magic pipe he uses to lure rats and children into his grasp. The second involves three strangers who all see the same house in a dream. There’s no indication that either of these ideas is indeed The Land Of Nod, but I’m personally hoping the second idea comes to fruition if not now then later down the road for Ball.

Ball’s Skinamarink was made for a budget of $15,000 in his childhood home. It was based on Ball’s similarly shattering short film Heck, which is available to watch on his YouTube channel. The feature film was released theatrically in 2023 and went on to gross over two million dollars at the box office, which is not a small feat for an experimental indie horror title.

If you haven’t seen the cursed film, Skinamarink follows two children, seemingly home alone, who are taunted by some strange cosmic entity.

In his review of the film from the 2022 Fantasia Film Festival, Dread Central’s Josh Korngut wrote, “The horrors of ‘Skinamarink’ are in its ability to transport you back to your childhood home and then leave you there. Unattended, abandoned, and lost.”

Ronald Bronstein, Eli Bush, and Josh Safdie will produce The Land Of Nod under their new production banner Central Pictures. SpectreVision’s Lawrence Inglee, Daniel Noah, and Elijah Wood will also produce, as well as Tatiana Bears and Bruno Vernaschi Berman. Theo Vieljeux will serve as executive producer.
