Guillermo del Toro Calls this Nightmarish Free-to-Watch Thriller “Brilliant, smart, & creepy”
In addition to creating some of the most visually striking films of our time, Guillermo del Toro is also an avid supporter of the creative output of his filmmaking peers. Over the years, the Pan’s Labyrinth director has championed many standout efforts via social media. I know I have discovered plenty of hidden gems by following his recommendations.
Guillermo del Toro loves this underrated horror thriller.
Speaking of del Toro’s cinematic suggestions, I have one to share with you right now, dear reader. The rec in question is a scathing indictment of religious fanaticism and a sorely underrated chiller with strong Giallo vibes. I’m talking about Alice, Sweet Alice (also known as Communion and Holy Terror).
The Oscar-winning filmmaker has nothing but praise for Alice, Sweet Alice. His tweet endorsement reads: “Film: Alice Sweet Alice by Alfred P Sole. Brilliant, smart, creepy-as f–k. Catholic Giallo about the psycho-sexual labyrinth of youth. A+”
I couldn’t say it any better than GdT did. But if you’re curious to hear my thoughts, I previously covered the film for Dread Central. In that write-up, I summed the picture up with the following statement: “All in, Sole was a legendary talent, and Alice, Sweet Alice is his masterpiece. The film functions as a twisty and gritty mystery that is likely to keep uninducted viewers guessing up until the point at which all is revealed.”
If those endorsements have you keen to experience this underrated effort, we’ve got you covered. Head straight to Tubi, where you can find the film streaming for free (with ads) as of the publication of this post.
The setup for this depraved chiller goes like this:
Favorite daughter Karen (Brooke Shields) is viciously strangled and set afire in church on the day of her First Communion, and suspicion falls on her jealous and emotionally unstable sister, Alice (Paula E. Sheppard). When the girls’ aunt, Annie (Jane Lowry), is later stabbed on an apartment complex stairway, Alice is sent away. But the attacks continue, prompting priest Father Tom (Rudolph Willrich) and Alice’s dad, Dominick (Niles McMaster), to go in search of the real killer.
That’s all we have for you at present, dear reader. Stay tuned to Dread Central for more exciting recommendations from your favorite cinematic luminaries as we uncover them. Also, don’t forget to follow us on the social media platform formerly known as Twitter (please don’t call it X).
