‘Presence’: Steven Soderbergh’s Supernatural Horror Gets Anxiety-Inducing Trailer
It’s almost reductive to call Steven Soderbergh a brilliant filmmaker. He’s more than just brilliant. He is an Oscar-winning director with an uncompromising creative vision. Soderbergh recently shot a chilling horror film entirely on iPhone and people loved it. Now, he’s back with a found footage horror effort told entirely from the perspective of a malevolent presence. This latest offering is appropriately titled Presence.
The fine folks at Neon are distributing Presence and because they are thoughtful, they have just dropped a full trailer for your enjoyment. Natch, we have it available for you to scope in the player below.
If you’re unfamiliar with Soderbergh’s Presence, let me give you a brief primer. In addition to sitting at the helm, Soderbergh also worked as the cinematographer on the project. He uses the found footage storytelling technique to immerse the viewer in the narrative, telling the story of the Payne family through the perspective of a supernatural entity that has taken up residence within the confines of their home.
That’s truly an innovate and unexpected approach to storytelling. And not surprisingly, people are having strong reactions. Variety even reported that people walked out of the Sundance screening because they couldn’t take the level of anxiety the film rains down on its audience. That’s high praise for a horror picture. You truly cannot buy press like that.
Watch the official trailer:
Our own Chad Collins reviewed the film out of the 2024 Sundance Film Festival and wrote:
“In the quiet, muted spaces, Presence is a chilling foray into modern-day hauntings… Presence is a remarkable accomplishment, one liable to leave audiences with the sinking feeling they’re tethered to a presence all their own as the credits roll.”
Presence stars Lucy Liu, Julia Fox, Chris Sullivan, Callina Liang, and West Mulholland. Soderbergh directs from a script penned by David Koepp. You might recognize Koepp as the scribe behind Jurassic Park and Stir of Echoes.
If the trailer has you jazzed to check the film out, you won’t have to wait long. Neon has announced that the flick will bow in theaters on January 24, 2025.
