The #1 Movie On Netflix Is “a great whodunnit slasher”

A streaming slasher film about a teenager who travels back in time to save a loved one from a serial killer is the #1 film on Netflix in the U.S. today. You are probably thinking to yourself, “Isn’t Totally Killer on Prime Video, and didn’t that come out last year?”

If you are asking yourself those questions, I have answers. The film in question is called Time Cut. It bears striking similarities to Totally Killer. But as it turns out, this is yet another case of ‘twin films’ going into production and releasing around the same time. Totally Killer was filmed in 2022. But Time Cut lensed in 2021. The substantial similarities are merely coincidence.

The setup for this Netflix original goes like this:

A teen in 2024 accidentally time-travels to 2003, days before a masked killer murdered her sister.

Investors want to fund films that are likely to resonate with the widest possible audience at any given time. What that looks like is often pretty specific. Accordingly, films with a similar conceit might go into development with two studios at the same time. That’s how we ended up with Olympus Has Fallen and White House Down both landing in 2013. Each film sees a terrorist attack unfolding on the White House.

Similarities to Totally Killer aside, Hannah Macpherson’s Time Cut is dominating the streaming scene today. The film currently sits as the most-watched picture on the Netflix platform. But is it worth the investment? That depends entirely on who you ask. The film isn’t really winning over critics. It sits at just 19% on Rotten Tomatoes as of the publication of this post. And the picture’s Metacritic score is an uninspiring 37/100.

With that said, there are some Twitter (X) users who seem to be having a great time with the picture. One even called it the perfect teen/tween slasher movie to watch w/the family. So, who knows how you’ll react? You may just have to check Time Cut out for yourself.

You can scope the reactions below to see if you think the film is for you.

If the reactions above have you itching to check out Time Cut, head over to Netflix and give it a spin. Who knows? You may just enjoy the early 2000s nostalgia.

That’s all we have for you at present, dear reader. Stay tuned to Dread Central for more updates on which films are dominating the streaming charts in the near future.
