Stephen King Loves This “Jaw-Droppingly Fantastic” New Thriller on Netflix
Right now, there are a lot of fantastic thrillers worth streaming on Netflix. Producer Sam Raimi and directors Adam Schindler and Brian Netto recently released Don’t Move, a film we called “an entertaining diversion with intense action sequences” in our three-and-a-half-star review. Unhinged, an appropriately nasty Russell Crowe thriller, remains one of the finest thrillers you can stream right now. For the throwback crowd, both Ashley Judd vehicles Twisted and Very 2000s Horror The Butterfly Effect are streaming now, too. Plus, one of horror writer Stephen King’s favorite shows, The Diplomat, recently launched its second season. The season has already skyrocketed up the Netflix charts where earlier this week, it was the most-streamed show on the platform.
Per Netflix: Golden Globe winner Keri Russell stars in this gripping drama about a US diplomat chasing a conspiracy she fears reaches the highest levels of government.
The Diplomat, from showrunner Debora Cahn, was a massive success for Netflix when the first season premiered in April 2023. Star Keri Russell (Dark Skies, Antlers) received rave reviews for her performance, securing both Golden Globe and Primetime Emmy Award nominations for her role as titular diplomat Kate Wyler. The first season, like the second, was a resounding success, topping the charts upon its premiere.
Even better, The Diplomat has resisted the Netflix cycle of long-gestating second seasons. The second season arrives just a little over a year after the first, bucking convention (and audience disinterest). The show has even recaptured the attention of Stephen King. The famed horror author responded to a tweet calling the show’s second season “jaw-droppingly fantastic,” adding how the final scene in particular was a standout.

Agreed. That final scene! https://t.co/4BxqYw9Mi8

Other fans online haven’t been able to get enough of the politically-charged thriller. The Diplomat, like the best of them, only seems to get better as it goes on.
Check out some choice social media reactions to the show’s tense, surprising second season below:

Whyyyyyy is S2 of The Diplomat only 6 episodes when S1 was 8???? We teach women to shrink themselves!!!!
Watched #TheDiplomat season two in one evening and it’s even better than season one. Six episodes are not enough, I wished it was a 26-episode season. Geopolitical storytelling at its best and I wish I’d been in the writers room. Twisty AF pic.twitter.com/nhbOLWG0XQ

The dialogue in The Diplomat is so superior. This show is for Adults

I know I’m probably the only person watching The Diplomat but that was honestly an incredible season of television up until the last 30 seconds (not exaggerating, 30 seconds) when it immediately became one of the most laughable and insane things I’ve ever seen

Just started 'The diplomat' on Netflix. It's so good!

Season 2 of The Diplomat is NOT disappointing. I wish I could go back to before I had watched the series and watch it all over again afresh.

Kate and Hal’s marriage in The Diplomat is as captivating as the political drama itself, it’s a mix of tension, love, and hidden motives, I’m hooked

#TheDiplomat is back for a shorter run in season 2, but the absurd thrills of it all are bigger than ever. It’s soapy and ridiculous and must-see TV anchored by the always exceptional Keri Russell and a scene-stealing turn from Allison Janney (who joins the show in episode 5) pic.twitter.com/dTxQ2pomBN

There should be a new Emmy Awards category for "Best Ending to Season" and The Diplomat Season 2 should get it.

Have no fear. Netflix has already announced The Diplomat’s renewal for a third season. If you’re not already locked in, now’s the time. The thriller is only going to get better from here.
