‘Idle Hands’: 90s Slacker Horror To Get Remake From Finn Wolfhard, Billy Bryk, and Jason Reitman

idle hands

Fresh off their directorial debut Hell Of A Summer, Finn Wolfhard and Billy Bryk are back to co-write the upcoming Idle Hands reimagining, as reported earlier today by Variety. While there’s no word on whether they’ll also direct the film yet, the duo is working with Jason Reitman, who will produce the film for Sony Pictures.

In the original Idle Hands, released in 1999 and directed by Rodman Flender, a high school student (played by teen heartthrob Devon Sawa) finds himself in a bit of a predicament when his right hand becomes possessed and develops a penchant for murder. Sawa starred in the slacker horror-comedy alongside Seth Green, Elden Henson, Jessica Alba, Vivica A. Fox, Sean Whalen, and Christopher Hart.

Wolfhard and Bryk’s first foray into feature filmmaking was also a horror-comedy, which sets great groundwork for tackling the 90s cult classic. Hell Of A Summer premiered at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival, which we reviewed and wrote, “As Baby’s First Slasher Flick, it may just do the trick.” The duo wrote, directed, starred, and produced the film, which is a twist on the summer camp slasher we’ve grown to know and love. Since its premiere, Neon has bought the project and set a summer 2025 release date.

Idle Hands reunites Wolfhard and Bryk with Reitman, who previously worked together on the two most recent Ghostbusters films, as well as Saturday Night.

Reitman told Variety, “Finn and Billy crushed their directorial debut and have a completely original take on Idle Hands that captures a disaffected generation. We are excited to support them as they bring their unique take to the screen and summon the demons.”

Reitman is producing alongside Jennifer Todd and Suzanne Todd via their Team Todd banner. Gil Kenan also will produce, while Maia Eyre is overseeing the project at Sony.
