The World’s Once Biggest Pop Star Took ‘The Substance’ and She Loved It

The hottest horror film of the year has one of the hottest pop stars of the century buzzing (and I’m not talking about Lady Raven or Skye Riley). The sixth most-followed person of all time on Twitter, Katy Perry, took to the platform to share her thoughts on Coralie Fargeat’s ferocious, sensational The Substance. After winning the Cannes Film Festival Award for Best Screenplay, The Substance went on to gross an incredible $49.4 million as of this writing. Not bad for Cronenberg-inspired body horror. Better still, the movie is now streaming on Mubi. If you missed it in theaters, now’s your chance to try The Substance for yourself. One injection and you’ll be hooked.

Per Mubi: With sharp wit and cathartic intensity, Coralie Fargeat turns toxic beauty culture inside out in her mind-blowing latest feature. Powered by a career-best performance from Demi Moore, The Substance fearlessly bulldozes its way into the midnight-movie pantheon and the feminist canon.

Here at Dread Central, we all agree The Substance is one of the best, if not the best, horror movies of the year. In his perfect, five-star review, Josh Korngut wrote, “Coralie Fargeat has triumphantly returned with The Substance, her brilliant sophomore film that will leave an immortal mark on the horror subgenre and cinema as a whole.” Even filmmaker Guillermo del Toro was a fan, calling the film “Pulsating, humorous, relentless.”

Demi Moore’s performance has dominated the Awards Season conversation, with many pundits and critics speculating she’s a lock for an Academy Award nomination. Both her and co-star Margaret Qualley have never been better, and coupled with Fargeat’s biting, satirical writing, The Substance remains a hoot even as it dovetails into some pretty dark places.

The Substance

Taking to Twitter, Katy Perry was spot-on with her short and sweet assessment: “The Substance – best film this year.” Honestly, I might agree with her. There are several horror titles competing for the top spot—Daddy Longlegs is calling—though there’s a solid chance that come December, I crown The Substance with the honor it deserves.

You can check out Perry’s tweet below.

I want to hear what you think. Did you take The Substance? Did it get you hooked? Is it the best of the year, a modern classic, or were you disappointed by the hype? Let me know over on Twitter @Chadiscollins.
