The #1 Most-Watched Series on Prime Video Worldwide is Now an Intense Survival Thriller
The Walking Dead made zombies accessible to mainstream audiences in a way we hadn’t seen before. The undead have always been around, and horror fans have always understood the appeal. But they’ve become an even more significant part of pop culture in the 14 years since the show premiered on AMC. Even though the original series incarnation has concluded its epic run, zombies are still as popular as ever. HBO’s The Last of Us has resonated similarly, ensuring the popularity of the onscreen zombie will not wane anytime soon.
With the world captivated by the undead, it’s no surprise that a new zombie film is resonating with Prime Video subscribers across the globe. It’s called Apocalypse Z: The Beginning of the End and currently sits as the most-watched film on the Prime Video platform (globally).
This Spanish-language horror film is adapted from a novel by Manel Loureiro. The book in question is part of a greater trilogy of zombie novels. Carles Torrens directs the film from a screenplay adapted by Ángel Agudo. The picture world premiered at the iconic Sitges Film Festival before (appropriately) debuting on the Prime Video platform on Halloween of 2024.
The film currently has only a small handful of reviews collected on Rotten Tomatoes. While there is currently no critical consensus, the critiques uploaded thus far are primarily positive. The majority of write-ups say that the film does use some familiar tropes but still manages to be entertaining and engaging. The Popcornmeter (formerly known as the audience score) sits at a promising 69%.
I think it’s safe to say that this film will likely resonate with zombie lovers. If you count yourself among their ranks, head to Prime Video and give the flick a shot.
The setup for this zombie horror goes like this:
A strange disease has spread across the planet, turning people into violent creatures. Manel, who lives in isolation after the death of his wife, will have to manage to survive in this apocalyptic scenario with his cat.
