This Perfect-for-Winter John Carpenter Thriller Leaves Prime Video Soon; Don’t Miss It!
Fall is winding down, dear reader. Winter is almost upon us. Can’t you just feel the air getting colder as you warm your hands over an open fire. By this time of year, it gets dark outside by about 5:00 PM in my neck of the woods. That drives some people completely nuts. But I love these short days. Darkness is the perfect backdrop for watching movies!
As it turns out, one of my favorite films to watch in the atmospheric dead of winter is gearing up to make its ‘Escape from Prime Video.’ See what I did there? I’m talking about the ‘certified fresh’ John Carpenter body horror picture, The Thing.
If you count yourself a fan of the film and fancy the idea of taking it in at what is arguably the best time of year to do so, make your way to Prime Video before the flick takes flight at the end of the month!
The Thing is adapted from the John W. Campbell novella Who Goes There?. The tome was previously adapted for the screen in 1951 as The Thing from Another World. Carpenter’s adaptation changes some of the details from the novel, but his interpretation adheres more faithfully to the source material than its predecessor.
Carpenter helmed from a script by Bill Lancaster. Lancaster is perhaps best known for writing the underdog comedy The Bad News Bears.
The Thing went over budget during production and didn’t make a big splash at the box office upon release. However, the picture has cemented itself as a cult classic in the years since. And that just goes to show that John Carpenter is often way ahead of the curve.
The setup for this John Carpenter classic goes as follows:
In remote Antarctica, a group of American research scientists are disturbed at their base camp by a helicopter shooting at a sled dog. When they take in the dog, the seemingly gentle creature brutally attacks both human beings and canines in the camp and they discover that the beast can assume the shape of its victims. A resourceful helicopter pilot (Kurt Russell) and the camp doctor (Richard Dysart) lead the camp crew in a desperate, gory battle against the vicious creature before it picks them all off, one by one.
That’s all we’ve got for you, for the time being. Be sure to stay tuned to Dread Central for more updates on what’s coming to and or leaving your favorite streaming platforms. If you’d like to chat more about John Carpenter’s cinematic output, you can find me over on Threads @FunWithHorror.
