Now the #1 Movie on Hulu, This Acclaimed Horror Reboot Dominated the Box Office Last Summer

Hulu

Fede Alvarez is one of my favorite contemporary directors working in the genre space. He is a master at tension-building. His Evil Dead reboot perfectly captured the essence of the original franchise while carving out a space for itself. His inversion on the home invasion thriller Don’t Breathe is a cinematic panic attack. And Alien: Romulus has already cemented its place as one of my favorite horror films of 2024.

Speaking of Alien Romulus, that chilling effort is connecting with Hulu subscribers in a big way. It currently stands as the most-watched film on the platform. I’d say I’m surprised, but I’m not. The flick pulled in over $350 million during its theatrical exhibition, and rightfully so. It’s a fast-paced sequel that capitalizes on many of the elements that work so well about the series’ first two installments. Moreover, the flick manages to incorporate elements from prior installments without feeling like a cynical attempt at fan service.

If you’re an Alien franchise fan and have yet to experience Alien: Romulus, I suggest you go to Hulu and check it out for yourself. It’s just the right mix of familiar and new. The action starts early and never lets up.

Alvarez co-wrote Romulus with frequent collaborator Rodo Sayagues. The pair previously scripted Evil Dead and Don’t Breathe together—quite the dynamic duo.

Cailee Spaeny, David Jonsson, Archie Renaux, Isabela Merced, and Spike Fearn topline the picture.

The film was initially planned as a direct-to-Hulu debut. However, 20th Century Studios ultimately opted for a theatrical release instead. I think the box office yield proves that they made the right choice.

The film will debut on home video on December 3rd. It will be available on Blu-ray and 4K. A limited edition VHS was also available for pre-order but appears to be sold out everywhere. If you missed your chance for that, I’m sure it will be on eBay before long.

The setup for this electrifying sequel on Hulu goes as follows:

Space colonizers come face to face with the most terrifying life-form in the universe while scavenging the deep ends of a derelict space station.
