Manuel Garcia-Rulfo Stars in Forgotten Thriller Now on Prime Video with a Twisted Ending
While probably best known for portraying Mickey Haller in the Netflix original series The Lincoln Lawyer (co-starring horror icon Neve Campbell!), Mexican actor and rising star Manuel Garcia-Rulfo first caught the attention of horror fans with his appearance in the From Dusk Til Dawn series. It was short lived but it was worth the watch. We know you love this guy as much as we do, which is why we’re psyched to see a little-known thriller he made is streaming right now on Prime Video.
An underrated hero
For those in need of a reminder, Garcia-Rulfo has starred alongside Ryan Reynolds in 6 Underground, Denzel Washington in The Magnificent Seven, and Scarlett Johansson in the upcoming Jurrasic World: Rebirth.
Possibly thanks to his time on the The Lincoln Lawyer, Garcia-Rulfo currently stars in the new Netflix film Pedro Páramo, which is based on a work of classic Mexican literature written by his grand uncle twice removed, Juan Rulfo, an icon of the magical realism literary movement. The film marks cinematographer turned director Rodrigo Prieto’s (Argo, Babel, The Wolf of Wall Street) directorial debut and promises to capture all of author Juan Rulfo’s trademark desolate landscapes and supernatural trappings…
The high seas of horror
However, before you set foot in the ghostly fever dream of Pedro Páramo, we suggest you check out the 2019 nautical thriller Mary (2018). This underappreciated gem finds Manuel Garcia-Rulfo co-starring alongside Academy Award winner Gary Oldman and Emily Mortimer and, early on, evokes the charm of a typical family overcoming a challenge only to sink to sinister depths.
Released by our friends at RLJE Films and sporting a 4 out of 5 stars on Amazon Prime, Mary centers on the story of David (Oldman), who purchases a mysteriously abandoned boat at auction. Tired of working for someone else, David sees this as his last chance to own a fishing charter company alongside his partner, Mike (Garcia-Rulfo). However, David’s wife Sarah (Mortimer) is unsure of jumping in head first. After repairing the ship, they set out on their maiden voyage with their two daughters in tow toward Bermuda, slowly succumbing to madness aboard the titular Mary.

Directed by Michael Goi (Megan is Missing) and written by Anthony Jaswinski (The Shallows), Goi also served as cinematographer on Mary, coming right off his stint as director of photography for American Horror Story across fifty-two episodes of the hit series and a few years after his cinematography work on The Town That Dread Sundown (2014).
Some amazingly creepy films have taken place aboard boats, and Mary is certainly anchored among them, though it might have slipped through many fan’s sonars. This movie pairs well with films such as the obvious fan favorite Ghost Ship (2002), The Boat (2018), Triangle (2009), Dead Calm (1989), and our releases Harpoon (2019) and Sea Fever (2019), to name only a few.
If you are a fan of this sub-genre of horror, we highly recommend you book a ticket for this voyage. Catch it now on Amazon Prime. But be warned, the ending is quite the shocker.
