The #1 Horror Movie on Netflix is a Disturbing Prediction About AI and “Our future”
I have such a complicated relationship with technology. I appreciate the convenience it affords. However, I hate the idea that our tech is constantly tracking us. I use Apple products (in part) because they are slightly less nosy and invasive than their Android counterparts. Even still, I am well aware of the price we pay for constant connectivity. Our HomePods hear every word we say. They’re just lying in wait, planning to take over our lives and bring forth Judgement Day.
Maybe that’s a bit of an exaggeration. Or is it? Chris Weitz, writer/director of the horror film AfrAId doesn’t seem to think it’s such a leap. His film is something of an admonition on the cost of connectivity and the dangers of putting our trust in tech.
Judging solely from the film’s marketing materials, the message appears on point. However, I cannot speak to the efficacy of the overall execution. Instead, I have collected a few social media reactions for you to pore over.
Add Afraid to the movie list, this movie has my heart racing, it’s so good

John Cho, Katherine Waterston, Keith Carradine, Havana Rose Liu, and Lukita Maxwell topline the picture.
The film began life under the title They Listen before settling on AfrAId. The flick was originally slated for a summer 2023 release but was ultimately pushed back an entire year to the summer of 2024.
AfrAId was made for an estimated budget of $12 million (before marketing expenses) and only grossed $12.6 million at the global box office. I suspect the flick will soon reach the point of profitability with streaming and home video revenue. However, it’s hard to say with any certainty exactly how long that will take.
If you’re game to see why AfrAId is the most-watched horror film on Netflix today, head on over and give it a look.
The setup for this top-charting Netflix horror thriller goes like this:
Curtis and his family are selected to test a revolutionary new device, a digital assistant called AIA, that takes smart homes to the next level. As AIA begins to learn everyone’s behavior and anticipate their needs, it soon makes sure nothing and no one gets in the family’s way.
That’s all we have for you at present, dear reader. Keep an eye out in the near future for more updates on which films are making waves on the streaming charts.
