The #1 Most-Watched Movie on Max is this New Golden Globe-Nominated Legacy Horror Sequel
We waited more than 30 years for a Beetlejuice sequel. After countless false starts, endless rumors, and a series of abandoned themes, the picture finally made it out of development hell and into theaters. After all that, the wait proved to be worth our while. The flick is a pleasant return to form that resonated with fans of all ages. The sequel cleaned up during its theatrical exhibition, taking in over 450 million at the global box office. Not to mention, the picture even scored a Golden Globe nomination for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement.
With that in mind, it’s no big surprise that Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is now enjoying a successful streaming debut. In fact, this delightfully irreverent effort has claimed the top spot on the Max charts today and will surely continue to enjoy a successful run on the platform for the foreseeable future.
The sequel’s troubled journey to release likely helped in some ways. The long delay created anticipation and gave fans of the original time to start families. Now, people who grew up watching the original have had the opportunity to share their appreciation for the film with kids of their own.
If you’re game to experience (or revisit) the long-gestured sequel, make your way over to HBO’s Max and give it a whirl. If you’re keen to revisit the original, the series’ first installment is also available on the platform.
The film succeeds thanks in large part to an all-star cast that features returning characters and fresh faces alike. The lineup includes Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, Catherine O’Hara, Jenna Ortega, Justin Theroux, Willem Dafoe, Monica Bellucci, Arthur Conti, Nick Kellington, Santiago Cabrera, Burn Gorman, Danny DeVito, Sami Slimane, Amy Nuttall, Mark Heenehan.
Tim Burton directed the sequel from a script by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar.
The setup for this outlandish effort goes as follows:
Still haunted by Beetlejuice, Lydia’s life gets turned upside down when her daughter discovers a portal to the afterlife. When someone says Beetlejuice’s name three times, the mischievous demon soon returns to unleash his very own brand of mayhem.
