This Denzel Washington Thriller Based on a Bestselling Novel is Now Streaming!
Few working actors have the universal appeal of Denzel Washington. He is a chameleon who can play almost any role and win an Oscar in the process. The actor has charm, good looks, and the ability to elevate almost any film in which he appears. It’s no wonder people love him.
If you yearn for more Denzel in your life, we’ve got you covered, dear reader. One of the actor’s films recently landed on streaming. This one is based on a bestselling novel by John Grisham. In case you haven’t guessed, I’m talking about The Pelican Brief.
The setup for this Denzel Washington thriller goes like this:
Taut legal thriller about a law student whose legal brief about the assassination of two Supreme Court justices causes her to be targeted by killers. She realizes just how accurate her accusations have been when her lover and mentor is murdered. Forced to go on the run in New Orleans, she is aided by a journalist who helps her unravel a conspiracy involving senior government figures.
Although it’s a bit longer than I’d normally prefer (at nearly 2.5 hours), I really enjoy this movie. And the long runtime is actually justified. The flick starts well into the events of the novel (which is an enjoyable read) and truncates a lot of the narrative. There’s not a lot left to trim from the finished product.
Washington has great screen chemistry with co-star Julia Roberts. But I’m pleased to say that writer/director Alan J. Pakula doesn’t try to shoehorn a romance between the leads into the proceedings. Not every film needs a love story. There’s not really time for one, anyway. The action unfolds at light speed and there’s nary a dull moment.
In addition to Washington and Roberts toplining, the film also features appearances by recognizable names like John Heard, Tony Goldwyn, John Lithgow, and Cynthia Nixon. That’s quite the roster.
