Bestselling author Stephen King uses his tenure as an Entertainment Weekly columnist to deliver hot takes, share praise for films he loves, and pen editorial content in various forms. I recently happened upon a 2009 post where King compiled a list of his favorite movies of the year for the outlet. Not surprisingly, there are some exceptional picks on the author’s list. Seeing as one of the titles on his top 10 is a brilliant genre picture we think you’ll love, we wanted to take a moment to spread the good word.
Without further ado, number six on King’s Best of 2009 list is Neill Blomkamp’s District 9. The author praised the film’s use of subtext and impressive effects work, saying: “This quasi (not to mention queasy) documentary sci-fi pic is a clever parable about the price of racial prejudice, but what really struck me about it was how the special effects served the story, rather than the other way around. If 2012 is good cheese, then District 9 is a fine wine.”
What is the setup for this Stephen King-endorsed science fiction film?
Thirty years ago, aliens arrived on Earth—not to conquer or give aid, but to find refuge from their dying planet. Separated from humans in a South African area called District 9, the aliens are managed by Multi-National United, which is unconcerned with the aliens’ welfare but will do anything to master their advanced technology. When a company field agent (Sharlto Copley) contracts a mysterious virus that begins to alter his DNA, there is only one place he can hide: District 9.
A sequel titled District 10 has been in development for more than a decade at this point. Blomkamp has repeatedly confirmed that the project is still on his radar. However, in 2023, the director told THR, “I don’t know if I even want to make that right now, but at some point down the line, it’ll probably get made.” Well, here’s hoping that long-gestured film finally makes its way out of development hell and into cinemas. We’ll be sure to keep you in the loop as new developments break.
That’s all that we have for you, for the time being.
