Rob Zombie’s films have a loyal cult following. But the director is no critical darling, far from it. In fact, Zombie’s most celebrated feature, The Devil’s Rejects, is actually ‘rotten’ on the popular aggregate film review platform Rotten Tomatoes. The picture holds a critical approval rating of just 54% as of the publication of this post. Though a handful of noteworthy critics like the late Roger Ebert were kind to the flick, the picture still remains relatively divisive in the grand scheme.

The Rotten Tomatoes critical consensus for The Devil’s Rejects reads as follows: “Zombie has improved as a filmmaker since House of 1000 Corpses and will please fans of the genre, but beware — the horror is nasty, relentless, and sadistic.” If you squint, there is a semi-favorable, albeit hesitant, endorsement somewhere in there.

Zombie’s sophomore feature certainly shows growth over his debut. The director set out to make the audience uncomfortable and succeeded in that conceit. He also deserves credit for delivering well-developed characters.

Where is Rob Zombie’s The Devil’s Rejects available to stream?

If you’re keen to rewatch the picture, there’s no time like the present. You can find The Devil’s Rejects streaming on Pluto as of the publication of this post.

Fun fact: Zombie sought out Phil Parmet, who lensed the critically acclaimed documentary Harlan County, USA because he wanted the proceedings to have the look and feel of a documentary. That was a smart choice and certainly helps pull the viewer into the world of the characters.

The setup for this divisive sequel goes as follows:

After a raid on the rural home of the psychopathic Firefly family, two members of the clan, Otis (Bill Moseley) and Baby (Sheri Moon Zombie), manage to flee the scene. Heading to a remote desert motel, the killers reunite with Baby’s father, Capt. Spaulding (Sid Haig), who is equally demented and intent on maintaining their murder spree. While the trio continues to torment and kill various victims, the vengeful Sheriff Wydell (William Forsythe) slowly closes in on them.
