I cannot think of a single creator in the genre space whose recommendations are more revered than those of Stephen King. Our readers always eagerly digest media suggestions from the macabre novelist. When he shares a film or series that resonates with him on social media, the post is almost guaranteed to go viral. I guess it comes down to the author knowing more than a little about characters, storytelling, and tension-building.
A couple of years ago, King took to the social media platform formerly known as Twitter (before it became a dumpster fire and he scrubbed most of his posts) to share his thoughts on a flick that impressed him a great deal. The film is called I Came By. You can see the author’s take on the flick via the screencap below.

I think that’s probably an apt comparison King is making. He’s likening I Came By to the work of two authors known for writing escapist thrillers.
The setup for this Netflix thriller that captivated Stephen King is this:
Toby Nealey, a 23-year-old rebellious graffiti artist, targets upper-class residences and leaves a message. When Toby enters his latest target’s house, he discovers an unexpected secret that sets him on a dangerous expedition.
I watched the film around the time it dropped on the platform in 2022 and remember it as a serviceable escapist thriller. But it didn’t leave the lasting impression on me that it did on Mr. King. In fact, I vividly recall starting to rewatch it about a year later, only to eventually realize I had seen it before. However, after reading King’s take, I may have to give I Came By another go. I know I enjoyed it well enough. But it clearly wasn’t all that memorable at the time.
Where can I stream I Came By?
The film is a Netflix original. So, if you are curious to experience it, make your way over there and give it a shot.
Babak Anvari (Under the Shadow) directed I Came By from a script he co-wrote with Namsi Khan (True Detective). The film stars George MacKay, Percelle Ascott, Kelly Macdonald, and Hugh Bonneville.
