Netflix Just Added This Gut-Wrenching Effort, Now It’s the #1 Horror Movie on the Platform
Is there a need to watch Hereditary more than once? I’m still reeling from my inaugural viewing and I’m not sure I want to revisit the flick just yet. However, not everyone feels that way. I recognize that some of you are gluttons for punishment and enjoy experiencing feelings of total devastation on repeat. If you are a steel-stomached trauma enthusiast and want to relive the film I’m still desperately trying to forget, you’re in luck. Netflix just added Hereditary to their lineup. Hooray?
Shortly after its recent addition to the platform, Hereditary sits as the most-watched horror film on the streamer today and claims the #6 slot overall.
The setup for this traumatic effort on Netflix goes like this:
When the matriarch of the Graham family passes away, her daughter and grandchildren begin to unravel cryptic and increasingly terrifying secrets about their ancestry, trying to outrun the sinister fate they have inherited.
I’m only half kidding when I say I don’t want to watch this Ari Aster effort a second time. Toni Collette’s performance is so raw and realistic. It’s immersive in such a way that I couldn’t shake it off when the credits rolled. I came away from my first (and only) viewing feeling like I’d just lost someone close to me. That’s a testament to Aster’s mastery of his craft and Collette’s prowess as a performer.
The film was an assured debut for Aster. Though he had helmed a collection of shorts before unleashing Hereditary on the world, it was his first feature.
In addition to sitting at the helm, Aster also takes sole screenwriting credit on Hereditary. It’s the film that put him on the map and set him up to further devastate the moviegoing public with his sophomore effort, Midsommar.
Not surprisingly, Hereditary is ‘certified fresh’ on Rotten Tomatoes, with a critical approval rating of 91%. The PopcornMeter (audience score) sits at a respectable 71%.
In addition to the ever-versatile Toni Collette, Hereditary also stars Milly Shapiro, Gabriel Byrne, and Alex Wolff.
That’s all we have for you at present, dear reader. Stay tuned to the site for more game-changing updates on which films are making waves on the streaming charts. If you’d like to further discuss why experiencing Hereditary once is more than enough for some, come find me on Threads @FunWithHorror.
