The #1 Crime Series On Netflix Today Is a Gritty Surprise Hit
A crime thriller series from Sweden is climbing its way up the Netflix charts today. It’s dark, gritty, and something of a surprise hit. The show is called The Breakthrough and it cracked the Netflix top 10 immediately after debuting on the platform earlier this month. The program stands as the most-watched crime series on Netflix today and claims the 10th place chart position overall.
The Breakthrough is a gritty Netflix crime series ripped straight from the headlines.
The program is adapted from a nonfiction book by Anna Bodin and genealogist Peter Sjölund called How the Genealogist Solved the Double Murder in Linköping. Their tome chronicles a real-life crime that rocked Sweden in 2004. A double murder that remained unsolved until genetic genealogy finally helped crack the case. The series naturally changes some of the details from the harrowing true crime story on which is based but keeps most of the major developments intact.
The critical reaction to the series thus far seems somewhat mixed. But with only four critic’s reviews tallied on Rotten Tomatoes, it’s difficult to get a clear picture. British outlet The Guardian gave the film a favorable critique. But their counterparts at The Times were less positive.
What isn’t difficult to determine is the viewer reaction to The Breakthrough. The Rotten Tomatoes PopcornMeter (formerly known as the audience score) sits at 75% with more than 50 votes counted. Moreover, the program has an impressive IMDb rating of 7.1/10 with over 6k votes tallied.
