Shock Rocker Rob Zombie Recreated a Wholesome Family Film Moment in One of His Nastiest Movies; Stream It For Free
Rob Zombie is a man of two very different extremes. He loves the wholesome television series upon which he cut his teeth. Shows like The Munsters and The Addams Family. And he also enjoys the incessant brutality of traumatic films like Kubrick’s A Clockwork Orange. Today’s update sees those two extremes merged in a surprising way.
During the holiday season, Zombie posted an update to Instagram revealing that he slyly paid homage to an iconic sequence from A Christmas Story in his 2016 horror picture 31. I’m talking about the scene where Black Bart and the ‘creeping marauders’ invade Ralphie’s backyard, only to be thwarted by the young cowboy and his trusty Red Ryder BB gun.
Zombie captioned the update: “Did you ever notice the same gang of thugs that attack Ralphie’s house in A Christmas Story also attack the RV in my film 31?” Scope the screencap of his post below for a comparison.
If you’re keen to rewatch 31 to see Zombie’s loose recreation of that classic sequence from A Christmas Story, you can do so with ease. Make your way over to Tubi where you can find Zombie’s 31 streaming for free (with ads) as of the publication of this here post.
Rob Zombie takes the sole screenwriting credit on 31, in addition to sitting at the helm of the feature.
The film’s title refers to the 31st day of October. The flick takes place in 1976, a time period to which Zombie is more than a little partial.
The film premiered at Sundance in 2016. After multiple cuts, Zombie finally secured a theater-friendly R-rating. Previous attempts resulted in a dreaded NC-17.
The cast of 31 includes frequent Zombie collaborators Malcolm McDowell, Richard Brake, Jeff Daniel Phillips, and Sheri Moon Zombie.
What is the setup for Rob Zombie’s 31?
Five carnival workers are kidnapped the night before Halloween and held hostage in a large compound. At the mercy of their captors, they are forced to play a twisted game of life or death called 31. For the next 12 hours, they must fight for their lives against an endless parade of homicidal maniacs.
