Guillermo del Toro Calls this Brutal Free-to-Stream Thriller “Shocking”

Guillermo del Toro reccomends

He may not be a household name, but Jeremy Saulnier is a filmmaker you should know. He first made waves with the quirky horror-comedy Murder Party nearly 20 years ago. Since then, Saulnier has helmed the A24 horror thriller Green Room, multiple episodes of HBO’s hit series True Detective, and the Rambo-esque crime thriller Rebel Ridge for Netflix. Saulnier is a master of his craft with plenty to say. In fact, one of his early career efforts even captured the attention of an auteur filmmaker called Guillermo del Toro.

That’s right, Saulnier’s 2013 film Blue Ruin impressed del Toro so much that he shared his appreciation for the flick on Twitter (X). The Pan’s Labyrinth director’s tweet reads, “Film: Blue Ruin by Jeremy Saulnier. With a beautiful central performance by Macon Blair, the film is inventive and assured thriller/drama.”

Blue Ruin

Where is this Guillermo del Toro-approved thriller available to stream?

That’s a powerful endorsement from an influential creator if I’ve ever seen such a thing. However, the praise is well-deserved. So much so that if you haven’t seen Blue Ruin, I suggest that you make your way to Tubi and remedy that oversight posthaste.

Saulnier wrote Blue Ruin in addition to sitting at the helm of the picture. The flick premiered as part of the Directors’ Fortnight section at Cannes in 2013.

Interestingly enough, director Jeremy Saulnier and star Macon Blair are childhood friends who made movies together in their youth. After Murder Party failed to make them stars, the pair set out to make Blue Ruin as their swan song, with designs on returning to life outside the film industry after its release. As it happened, Hollywood had other plans for the pair.

If you’re still on the fence, you can scope the trailer for Blue Ruin in the player below. If you opt to check the flick out, brace yourself. It’s a lot to take in.

The setup for Blue Ruin goes as follows:

An ominous piece of news sends a drifter (Macon Blair) back to his hometown to exact brutal — and inept — revenge for the deaths of his parents.
