From Ryan Coogler—director of Black Panther and Creed—and starring Michael B. Jordan comes a new vision of fear: Sinners. Coogler’s latest is his first foray into the horror genre and if the new trailer is to be believed, the director is not afraid of getting a little bloody. And, according to Coogler, this is his most personal film to date.

The plot synopsis simply reads, “Trying to leave their troubled lives behind, twin brothers (Jordan) return to their hometown to start again, only to discover that an even greater evil is waiting to welcome them back.

Yesterday, in a press conference for the film hosted by Juju Green (aka Straw Hat Goofy), Coogler shared his two major influences for Sinners: Stephen King’s novel Salem’s Lot and an episode of The Twilight Zone titled “The Last Rite of Jeff Myrtlebank”. With Sinners, Coogler is trying to channel the idea of focusing on how these creatures impact not just the main characters, but the entire town, as well.

The trailer alone channels those vibes, as it shows townsfolk holed up together in a single location, trying to survive a vampiric onslaught led by a group of white bloodsuckers.

This film marks Coogler’s fifth collaboration with Michael B. Jordan, who starred in Coogler’s directorial debut Fruitvale Station, and has appeared in each of his films ever since. “We grew up in the business together,” said Coogler. “[Jordan has] this incredible mix of talent and charisma, but he’s also a real craftsman. He’s constantly trying to challenge himself.” So Coogler decided to challenge Jordan in this film, even hiring a twin consultant (a close friend of Coogler’s) to help Jordan get into the mindset of twins, of two people who shared a womb. “We wanted to keep it from being caricature,” explained Coogler.

Jordan stars in the film as the central twin brothers, alongside Oscar nominee Hailee Steinfeld (Bumblebee, True Grit), Jack O’Connell (Ferrari), Wunmi Mosaku (Passenger), Jayme Lawson (The Woman King), Omar Miller (True Lies), and Delroy Lindo (Da 5 Bloods).

Zinzi Coogler, Sev Ohanian, and Ryan Coogler produced the film. Ludwig Göransson, Will Greenfield, and Rebecca Cho serve as the film’s executive producers.

Coogler’s behind-the-camera team includes his Black Panther franchise collaborators: director of photography Autumn Durald Arkapaw, Oscar-winning production designer Hannah Beachler, editor Michael P. Shawver, Oscar-winning composer Ludwig Göransson, and Oscar-winning costume designer Ruth E. Carter.

Sinners comes exclusively to theaters nationwide on April 18, 2025, from Warner Bros. Pictures.
