Unmissable Thriller on an Important ‘Best Horror Movies of All Time’ List is Now Streaming Free

Streaming Free peeping tom

I’ve been playing catchup for the past few years. In service of being the best critic I can be, I’ve been spending my downtime filling in cinematic blind spots. One of my most egregious oversights was Peeping Tom. It’s the godfather of the slasher film, one of the most influential horror pictures of the 20th century. Yet, I took my sweet time getting around to it. That was a big mistake. Peeping Tom is a beautifully lensed feature with a sense of discomfort that starts at the onset and only becomes more palpable as the picture progresses. The lead character, Mark (Karlheinz Böhm), manages to be simultaneously approachable and frightening, an unorthodox but highly effective juxtaposition.

Not surprisingly, Peeping Tom made Rotten Tomatoes’ list of the 200 greatest horror films of all time. Michael Powell’s proto-slasher claims the #40 spot on that exhaustive ranking.

Peeping Tom

If it weren’t for films like Peeping Tom and Psycho, the slasher genre might look completely different today. Peeping Tom is so influential that the fine folks at the British Film Institute ranked it as the 78th greatest British film of all time!

Where is this Rotten Tomatoes-endorsed feature available to stream?

Don’t make the unforgivable mistake I did. Do not sleep on this one. If you haven’t seen Peeping Tom, go to Tubi to check out the 40th greatest horror film of all time (according to Rotten Tomatoes). You can find the flick streaming there for free (with ads) as of the publication of this post.

The setup for Peeping Tom is this:

Loner Mark Lewis (Carl Boehm) works at a film studio during the day and, at night, takes racy photographs of women. Also, he’s making a documentary on fear, which involves recording the reactions of victims as he murders them. He befriends Helen (Anna Massey), the daughter of the family living in the apartment below his, and he tells her vaguely about the movie he is making. She sneaks into Mark’s apartment to watch it and is horrified by what she sees — especially when Mark catches her.
