This Divisive Russell Crowe Horror Film Leaves Netflix Next Week; Don’t Miss It
I have had a thing for Russel Crowe since I first saw him sans shirt in Gladiator as a teenager. Over the past 25 years, Crowe has slowly transitioned from muscled hunk to bearish dad bod. Yet, I’m still very much here for him. And I will still watch nearly anything in which the Aussie actor appears. That absolutely includes The Pope’s Exorcist. While the flick wasn’t much of a hit with critics, the moviegoing public seems to have had a good time with it. Perhaps seeing Russel Crowe riding a Vespa all over Europe won viewers over? It worked for me. Not to mention, Crowe’s performance is committed and accessible.
When does The Pope’s Exorcist leave Netflix?
Whether you are a die-hard fan of The Pope’s Exorcist and want to squeeze in one more watch while you still can, or you have yet to take the flick in and would like to do so, act quickly. The film will be exorcised (I really crack myself up sometimes) from the Netflix platform on February 12th.
The Pope’s Exorcist made just under $77 million at the global box office against an estimated budget of $18 million. The bulk of the box office receipts came from international territories. However, the flick held its position as the most-watched film on Netflix for a full nine days after it first debuted on the platform. With success at both the box office and on streaming, it’s no surprise that a sequel is reportedly in development.
The flick is based on the life of the late Father Gabriele Amorth, a decidedly big deal within the Vatican and one of the co-founders of the International Association of Exorcists. During his lifetime, Amorth reportedly performed more than 160,000 exorcisms! That adds up to a lot of perceived evil vanquished.
The setup for this horror thriller goes like this:
Father Gabriele Amorth, chief exorcist for the Vatican, battles Satan and innocent-possessing demons. A detailed portrait of a priest who performed more than 100,000 exorcisms in his lifetime.
That is absolutely everything we have for you at the moment, my friend.
