The #1 Most-Watched Movie on Netflix is a Delightfully Twisted Horror Comedy
A biting horror comedy with an ultra-talented cast, is making waves on the Netflix charts today. Interestingly enough, the film has been on the platform for a spell. However, it’s enjoying a resurgence in popularity of late, so much so that the picture has claimed its place as the most-watched film on the streamer in the US today.
Why is the film experiencing an uptick in popularity? Your guess is as good as mine, dear reader. However, with the current state of the world, it’s no great surprise that people need an escape from the headlines.
And The Menu a provides just that. It’s a darkly comedic distraction with a biting sense of humor and strong performances across the board.
The flick staged its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September of 2022. In November of the same year, the film bowed before audiences, pulling in just under $80 million at the global box office against an estimated budget of $30 million.
The film was well-received by critics and the general public. Stars Ralph Fiennes and Anya Taylor-Joy scored Golden Globe nominations for Best Actor and Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy.
Alexander Payne was initially attached to helm The Menu. He eventually left the project, citing scheduling conflicts. Mark Mylod ultimately stepped in to replace him.
Payne isn’t the only one who had to back away from the project. Emma Stone was initially slated to play Margot, the role Anya Taylor-Joy appears in. Stone reportedly left the production because she had other commitments.
Mylod directed the film from a script by Seth Reiss and Will Tracy. Tracy came up with the idea for the film after dining at an upscale island restaurant in Norway.
In addition to Ralph Fiennes and Anya Taylor-Joy, the picture’s impressive cast of characters includes Nicholas Hoult, Hong Chau, Janet McTeer, Judith Light, and John Leguizamo.
The setup for this biting horror comedy on Netflix goes like this:
Shocking surprises await a couple when they travel to a coastal island to sample a chef’s lavish menu at an exclusive restaurant.
