I’m not thrilled Melissa Barrera was fired from Scream 7, but the film is still happening, even though I’m not quite sure what’s happening with it (you’ll see what I mean). For context, in November 2023, franchise lead Barrera (Sam Carpenter) was fired by production company Spyglass Media Group for her comments on the ongoing crisis in Palestine. A month later, director Christopher Landon dropped out of the film, and Scream 7 seemed to be going to way of Stu Macher (more on that later). Where there’s a will, there’s a way.

It wasn’t until March 2024 that franchise star Neve Campbell—who was absent from Scream 6—confirmed she would be returning for a retooled Scream 7, now directed by franchise scribe Kevin Williamson from a script by Guy Busick who co-wrote the previous two movies. What exactly would this new Scream be? How would they deal with the absence of Tara and Sam? I still don’t have answers to that because with every new casting announcement, the more inexplicable this project becomes. And maybe that’s the point? Read on to see the latest in who’s back, who’s new, and what to expect with Scream 7.
Familiar Faces
The first confirmed casting news was Campbell’s role as Sidney Prescott. While she was absent from the previous film, the salary here was apparently enough to encourage her to return. Months later in December 2024, Core Four member Mason Gooding (Chad Meeks-Martin) signed on to reprise his role, joined by Courteney Cox, now the only main Scream player to appear in every franchise entry.

Earlier this year, Roger L. Jackson confirmed his return as the classic voice of Ghostface, and Jasmin Savoy Brown (Mindy Meeks-Martin) confirmed her return as well. While initial speculation suggested a hard pivot away from the stories of Scream and Scream 6, Brown and Gooding’s return suggests Scream 7 will be tying up some loose Scream 6 ends. These players are at least all alive. This year, Scream star Matthew Lillard and Scream 3 star Scott Foley were also announced to return. In what capacity remains unclear, but you can see where I’ve now got no idea what on earth this movie is going to be about. Is it Kevin Williamson’s cult of Ghostface? Is Emma Roberts going to be secretly returning? Might we be in store for Kevin Williamson’s New Scream?
New Victims (or Killers)
Alongside the cavalcade of familiar faces, several newcomers will be joining the Scream 7 cast. Isabel May was cast in November of last year as Sidney Prescott’s daughter, and Joel McHale (Deliver Us From Evil, bet you forgot about that) was cast later as Prescott’s husband, putting to bed the longstanding “Mark Kincaid is her husband” rumors. Celeste O’Connor, Asa Germann, Mckenna Grace, Sam Rechner, and Anna Camp also signed on in December for undisclosed roles.

Just recently, Mark Consuelos and Ethan Embry joined the cast. Scream 7 is a big world, it seems, and with filming now underway, there’s a chance a few more surprising casting announcements make their way to the trades soon.

Recently, Mason Gooding sat down with Tommy Daddario of “I’ve Never Said This Before” and shared, “It’s the most brutal Ghostface it’s been. There is a lot of blood and viscera, and I feel like with Kevin directing fans have a lot to look forward to what we do to these characters.” What do you think? Are you excited for Scream 7? Do you plan to skip it? Let me know over on Twitter @Chadiscollins.
