One of the Worst Horror Remakes of All Time, According to Critics, Is Now Free-to-Stream

Stream the fog remake

Just like films based on original ideas, horror remakes vary wildly in quality from one to the next. For every winning effort like Cape Fear or Dawn of the Dead, you have multiple reimaginings that simply do not land. A redux that truly does not land is now available to stream for free. Although, just because you can stream a film, doesn’t necessarily mean you should.

The film of which I speak is none other than Rupert Wainwright’s 2005 reboot of John Carpenter’s The Fog.

The Fog, Prime Video

There are many reasons why this reboot doesn’t work. However, I don’t put all the blame on Wainwright. I dig his religious thriller Stigmata. That flick demonstrates that he knows how to craft a scare. So, I have to assign some of the blame to the studio for insisting on a PG-13 rating. I also attribute fault to the hammy performances within. There are a lot of different elements working against this movie. It gets so much wrong, in fact, that Rotten Tomatoes included the picture on a list of the worst horror films of all time. Ouch.

The Fog comes in at #17 on that exhaustive ranking. Interestingly enough, it comes immediately after another critically panned PG-13 remake. Flatliners claims the #16 slot on the list.

Where is this Rotten Tomatoes-disapproved horror film available to stream?

If you are a glutton for punishment, you can find The Fog (2005) streaming on Tubi as of the publication of this post. However, the original is streaming on Prime Video. So, I suggest opting for that unless you’re really intent on making yourself miserable.

The setup for this universally panned remake goes like this:

The prosperous town of Antonio Bay, Ore., is born in blood, as the town’s founders get their money by murdering a colony of lepers. But the truth of what they did is concealed from subsequent generations. More than 100 years later, Elizabeth Williams (Maggie Grace), whose family lives in Antonio Bay, returns just as a statue in tribute to the founders is to be unveiled. When a mysterious fog rolls in, Elizabeth and her boyfriend (Tom Welling) soon discover it has vengeful supernatural powers.
