The #1 Most-Watched Series on Netflix is a Viciously Disturbing True Crime Documentary
It’s no secret that our society is captivated by the criminal mind. The abundance of true crime programming available on various streaming platforms and broadcast networks makes that abundantly clear. Each passing month brings a slate of new documentary features and series chronicling brazen acts of violence, deception, or both. On that note, Netflix recently debuted a new true crime docu-series. A case ripped from the headlines.
The series in question is called American Manhunt: O.J. Simpson. The former football player’s murder trial captivated our society in the ‘90s. In fact, I vividly remember our school secretary announcing the verdict over the intercom when I was in eighth grade.
Seeing as the case played out in the media in real-time and has already been covered plenty in the years since it’s surprising to see yet another series chronicling the ins and outs of the case. Yet, at the same time, maybe it’s not. ‘90s nostalgia is at an all-time high. And true crime is more widely consumed than ever before. So, perhaps I shouldn’t be surprised in the least.
Full disclosure: I haven’t seen the series. And I don’t have any designs on watching it. With that said, I sincerely hope that the coverage is respectful of Nicole Brown Simpson’s legacy. I can only imagine how hard it must have been for her loved ones to see her murder trial play out like entertainment. I hope that American Manhunt director Floyd Russ (who previously helmed a Netflix series on the Boston Marathon bombing) has taken an empathetic approach to his coverage that won’t reopen old wounds for the victim’s family.
