Guillermo del Toro Calls This Quentin Tarantino Picture on Netflix “an amazing experience”

Guillermo del Toro, The Hateful Eight

Dear reader, I have a special treat in store for you today. One celebrated and beloved genre filmmaker is championing the work of another iconic creator in the genre space. More specifically, Oscar-winning filmmaker Guillermo del Toro is championing the output of Academy Award winner Quentin Tarantino.

The film in question is Tarantino’s gritty western picture, The Hateful Eight. Guillermo del Toro once shared his appreciation for the flick on Twitter (don’t call it X), saying: “The H8ful Eight: an amazing experience. ‘Going to the movies’ in the way that is impossible to experience: Scope, ambition and auteural [sic] craft.”

The setup for this Quentin Tarantino picture is this:

While racing toward the town of Red Rock in post-Civil War Wyoming, bounty hunter John “The Hangman” Ruth (Kurt Russell) and his fugitive prisoner (Jennifer Jason Leigh) encounter another bounty hunter (Samuel L. Jackson) and a man who claims to be a sheriff. Hoping to find shelter from a blizzard, the group travels to a stagecoach stopover located on a mountain pass. Greeted there by four strangers, the eight travelers soon learn that they may not make it to their destination after all.

We frequently showcase recommendations from del Toro or Tarantino. So, having the occasion to spotlight del Toro recommending a picture by Tarantino is double the excitement any way you look at it.

Fun fact: The Hateful Eight began life as a sequel to Django Unchained. The initial title was Django in White Hell. Tarantino reportedly removed the Django character from the script, believing the film shouldn’t have a moral center. If removing the moral center was the writer/director’s goal, he succeeded remarkably. There is absolutely no moral center in The Hateful Eight. The characters truly live up to the promise of the film’s title.

Where is The Hateful Eight streaming?

If Guillermo del Toro’s endorsement has you keen to check out the film, you can do just that. Navigate your way to Netflix, where the flick is available to stream as of the publication of this post. Better yet, you can choose between the theatrical and extended cuts!
