This Divisive, Star-Studded Crime Thriller Leaves Netflix Soon, Don’t Miss It!

Netflix Lopez

Oliver Stone is one of the most fascinating filmmakers of our time. His work has garnered both extreme praise and extreme criticism. Not to mention, his output has been embroiled in its fair share of controversy. On one hand, Stone is a multiple Oscar winner. On the other, he’s received several Razzie nominations. The unpredictability of his output makes him a fascinating filmmaker. Even on Netflix.

I bring up Mr. Stone because one of his less-celebrated pictures is leaving the Netflix platform soon. Should you watch it? Well, that depends entirely on who you ask. The film in question is the 1997 neo-noir crime thriller U-Turn.

U-Turn

When does U-Turn leave Netflix?

The last day to watch this crime thriller on Netflix is 2/24. If you dig a star-studded cast, duplicitous characters, and dark atmosphere, I suggest giving the flick a watch. It delivers on all those fronts. However, keep in mind that some detractors called this 1997 effort derivative and failed to see the merit in some of the performances.

The picture’s star-studded cast includes  Sean PennJennifer Lopez, Nick Nolte, Billy Bob Thornton, Jon Voight, Powers Boothe, Joaquin Phoenix, and Claire Danes. Quite the talented lineup.

In addition to dividing critics, the flick also failed to make a splash at the box office. The picture brought in less than $7 million during its theatrical bow. That’s not a great showing against an estimated budget of $19 million.

The Golden Raspberry Awards nominated U-Turn in the Worst Director (Stone) and Worst Actor (Jon Voight) categories. Ouch.

Interesting aside: U-Turn was shot in the pre-Netflix era and utilizes reversal film to achieve a jarring look that fits the picture’s tone.

The setup for this crime thriller on Netflix goes as follows:

A drifter chooses to stop in the wrong town when his beloved Mustang develops engine trouble. Things seem to pick up when sultry Grace McKenna asks him home to help fix her curtains – until her husband Jake finds out. Jake then asks Cooper to kill Grace, but she has her own plans for Jake. Cooper, caught in the middle, had better choose the right side or he risks losing his life.
