The #1 Series On Netflix Is a Gut-Wrenching True Crime Tale

Netflix

Netflix continues to deliver true crime programming on the regular. The streamer has chronicled countless high-profile cases in recent years. The platform previously featured coverage on Alex Murdaugh’s crime spree, the JonBenét Ramsey case, the Menendez brothers, the Night Stalker, and so many more.

Now, the streamer is diving into Gabby Petito’s murder with American Murder: Gabby Petito. I can’t say that I’m surprised to see the service profiling this case. Petito’s untimely disappearance captivated the country and the search for the missing woman became a viral trend on TikTok. With that said, I question how much more coverage the case needs at this point. Several news magazines have already covered Gabby’s murder in painstaking detail, including how law enforcement failed her. Is there really more to say?

The setup for this Netflix docu-series goes as follows:

A young couple’s cross-country van journey, documented on social media, ends in tragedy when domestic violence shatters their seemingly perfect life; their story sparks a nationwide investigation and raises questions about family loyalty.

That depends on who you ask. The true crime docu-series currently sits as the #1 series on Netflix in the U.S. today. So, there’s clearly an audience eager to consume the content. However, I come back to questioning if the additional reporting serves a greater purpose. Is there an element to Gabby’s story that remains untold?

If you’re keen to check out this true crime series to see if it touches on any new details or brings any additional information to light, head over to Netflix where you can find out for yourself right now.

As for me, I’m planning to sit this one out. I can’t help but cringe at the idea that the producers used AI to recreate Gabby’s voice for the reading of her journal entries and text messages. I understand the argument that doing so makes Gabby a central focus (as she should be). However, I interpret that approach as a little cynical. I think hiring a voice actor to read her texts and journal entries is a more respectful alternative that still gives a voice to Gabby’s words.

That is absolutely everything that we have for you at present.
