This Forgotten Thriller Just Hit #1 on the Netflix Streaming Movie Charts: “10/10”

Blumhouse really has a chokehold on the horror genre. Every year, there are several Blumhouse titles released, many of which you might not have even heard of. In the past, I’ve tried to spotlight the best of these hidden gems—hello, The Boy Next Door—but there are still a dozen others you probably haven’t seen. Anybody remember 2019’s Bloodline? How about The Visitor? I do, but only because I reviewed it.

Netflix Don't Let Go

There’s a lot of Blumhouse, even more when you account for television series, books, podcasts, documentaries, and their many different releasing arms throughout the years, including the Blumhouse Tilt label. The label was intended to generate movies and attract new talent for multi-platform releases. Their last release was in 2019 when Jacob Aaron Estes’ Don’t Let Go arrived in theaters after a rousing Sundance premiere. Now, the film is the most-streamed thriller on Netflix. Check out more below:

Per Netflix: After receiving a call from his deceased niece, Detective Jack Radcliff races against the clock to prevent her murder from happening.

I’m a huge fan of Estes. Mean Creek is a masterpiece, and I had the privilege of reviewing his latest film, 2022’s He’s Watching, a found footage horror movie that cast several members of Estes’ family. Don’t Let Go is a microbudget yet profoundly affecting time travel thriller. Stars  David Oyelowo and Storm Reid have rarely been better, and among the slate of underseen Blumhouse thrillers, Don’t Let Go is worth holding onto.

Despite being over five years old, Don’t Let Go has clearly found its audience. Fans online can’t seem to get enough of the heartrending, thriller film, and they’ve taken to social media to share their thoughts. Most are positive. There are a few naysayers among the bunch, but the general consensus suggests this is a good one. Check out some choice reactions below:

While critical reviews at the time of Don’t Let Go’s release weren’t quite as strong, the film seems to have gotten better with age. Audiences are more equipped to handle the delicate merging of different genres—part horror, part drama, some thriller—and as a result, Don’t Let Go has emerged as a reclaimed gem. It couldn’t happen to a more deserving film.
