Mike Flanagan Lists this “Frustrating” Found-Footage Horror Movie as a Favorite and it’s Free to Watch

Judging by Mike Flanagan’s Letterboxd profile, the beloved filmmaker is something of a found footage connoisseur. That’s right, the Oculus director is mighty active on the platform and he has added a number of found footage films to this list of his favorite horror movies. One noteworthy addition to said list is the divisive found footage horror picture The Outwaters.
Flanagan isn’t alone in his appreciation for the film. It also resonated with critics in a major way. The Outwaters is ‘certified fresh’ on Rotten Tomatoes with a critical approval rating of 75%. The Rotten Tomatoes critical consensus reads: “The Outwaters may strike some viewers as frustratingly withholding, but it remains an ambitious — and overall effective — slice of found-footage horror.”
Despite the flick’s ability to win over critics, the movie-loving public is far less taken with the picture. The Rotten Tomatoes PopcornMeter (previously the Audience Score) sits at an abysmal 37%.

A lot of viewers took issue with the film’s ambiguous approach to narrative progression and lack of willingness to answer lingering questions. The film has drawn comparisons to the similarly divisive Skinamarink, which was released one year prior.
Where can I watch The Outwaters?
Where do you stand on The Outwaters? Have you seen it? Did you connect with the surreal atmosphere that this liminal effort offers up? Did you see the similarities to Skinamarink?
If you have yet to experience the film and Flanagan’s endorsement or the promise of ambiguity have you curious to experience the film, we’ve got you covered. As of the publication of this post, The Outwaters is available to stream for free (with ads) on Tubi. You can also find the flick on several other ad-supported VOD platforms right now.
The setup for this found footage chiller favored by Mr. Mike Flanagan goes like this:
An excursion to the Mojave Desert turns creepy when a group of campers starts to experience unexplained sounds, vibrations, and unnatural animal behavior. Then one night everything changes, sending the foursome on a mind-bending trip through terror.
That is absolutely everything that we have for you, for the time being, dear reader.
