The #1 Horror Movie on Netflix is a Pulse-Pounding Chiller Starring a Modern Day Scream Queen

The powers that be at Hulu recently removed the Maika Monroe chiller Watcher from the platform. However, Hulu’s loss is Netflix’s gain. Netflix swooped in and added the picture to their lineup yesterday. In the time since, Watcher is already the most-viewed horror flick on the streamer. The Maika Monroe-led genre feature claims the #3 slot overall on the Netflix charts today.
Watcher marks rising star Chloe Okuno’s feature-length directorial debut. The filmmaker penned the script, in addition to sitting at the helm. Prior to Watcher, Okuno wrote and directed the ‘Storm Drain’ segment for horror anthology V/H/S/94.

Watcher premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2022 where it was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize. From there, Shudder and IFC Midnight acquired the picture for distribution. IFC released the film in select theaters prior to its VOD debut. During that theatrical exhibition, the film pulled in an impressive $3.2 million globally. That’s no small feat for an indie picture in limited release.
Speaking of the film’s release, Watcher reportedly yielded one of the biggest opening weekend grosses ever for an IFC Midnight/Shudder property.
In addition to an impressive showing at the box office, the film also fared well with critics and horror fans. Watcher is ‘certified fresh’ on Rotten Tomatoes, with a critical approval rating of 88%. The flick also boasts a fairly impressive audience score of 67%.
The Rotten Tomatoes critical consensus reads: “Although its story may lack surprises, Watcher benefits from director Chloe Okuno’s chilling grip on the material — and Maika Monroe’s terrific work in the leading role.”
If you’re game to experience the film for yourself, you can head over to Netflix and give it a shot right now. If you would rather show your support to a smaller streamer, you can also find the flick available on Shudder.
The setup for this Netflix chart-topper goes as follows:
As a serial killer stalks the city, a young actress who just moved to town with her boyfriend notices a mysterious stranger watching her from across the street.
That is quite simply everything that we have for you at present, dear reader.
