The #1 Free-to-Watch Streaming Thriller is a Denzel Washington Hit that Reflects Modern Fears

Denzel Washington, Flight

A recent surge of plane crashes in North America has made a lot of people think twice about boarding an aircraft. Even though air travel is infinitely safer than driving, or even riding a train, the frequency of recent collisions and in-air mishaps has a lot of people on edge. Perhaps that’s why the Denzel Washington disaster thriller Flight is trending on Pluto. Maybe people are facing their fears through film. Or, maybe people just love the inimitable Denzel Washington. Either way, Flight is currently the #1 thriller on the streamer and the third most-watched film on Pluto overall.

Flight was a critical and commercial success inspired, in part, by actual events.

Robert Zemeckis directed Flight from a screenplay by John Gatins. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences nominated Gatins’ script for a Best Original Screenplay Oscar in 2013. The Academy also nominated Washington for Best Actor for his showing in the lead role.

The crash of Alaska Airlines Flight 261 (which transpired in 2000) served as a partial inspiration for Gatins’ screenplay. Flight isn’t explicitly based on that tragic ordeal. However, the inverted aircraft piece and several other details were directly inspired by that harrowing encounter.

Flight had a successful theatrical run, returning $161,772,375 against an estimated production budget of $31 million.

The film has a dynamite cast. The supporting lineup includes a variety of familiar names, including but not limited to: Don Cheadle, Kelly Reilly, John Goodman, Bruce Greenwood, and Melissa Leo.

If you’re curious why this 2012 flick is trending out of the blue, you can make your way over to Pluto and see for yourself.

The setup for this harrowing Denzel Washington thriller goes as follows:

Commercial airline pilot Whip Whitaker (Washington) has a problem with drugs and alcohol, though so far he’s managed to complete his flights safely. His luck runs out when a disastrous mechanical malfunction sends his plane hurtling toward the ground. Whip pulls off a miraculous crash-landing that results in only six lives lost. Shaken to the core, Whip vows to get sober — but when the crash investigation exposes his addiction, he finds himself in an even worse situation.
