Some days you want to watch a horror movie. Others, you want a romantic comedy. But what happens when you want a movie that combines horror tropes with romance, action, and sci-fi? You watch the #1 streaming movie on Apple TV+, The Gorge! Directed by horror master Scott Derrickson (Sinister, The Black Phone), this new genre-blending film is romantic, action-packed, and has a dash of body horror for good measure. Plus, it stars Anya Taylor-Joy, who continues to prove she’s a modern-day scream queen, Miles Teller, and Sigourney Weaver, another icon scream queen.

In the new film,

Two highly-trained operatives (Miles Teller and Anya Taylor-Joy) are appointed to posts in guard towers on opposite sides of a vast and highly classified gorge, protecting the world from an undisclosed, mysterious evil that lurks within. They bond from a distance while trying to stay vigilant in defending against an unseen enemy. When the cataclysmic threat to humanity is revealed to them, they must work together in a test of both their physical and mental strength to keep the secret in the gorge before it’s too late.

While the film of course leans into the romance, don’t worry, horror heads. The Gorge is more than just falling in love in a hopeless place. Derrickson makes sure of that. He also makes sure to use practical effects in the streaming title whenever possible, thanks to his horror background.

“We shot real rock walls and canyons and forests in Norway and then constructed the gorge itself out of photographed material. That’s why it looks so real,” Derrickson told Dread Central. “It is a CGI construct, but the imagery of the stuff that you’re looking at is all real.”

And just wait until you see what crawls out of the gorge at night…

Between Derrickson’s direction and a rollercoaster of a script from Zach Dean, The Gorge delivers pulse-pounding action, but from a slightly different angle that feels both familiar, yet unique. And the chemistry between Taylor-Joy and Teller isn’t too shabby, either.

In her review of the film, Dread Central’s Mary Beth McAndrews wrote,

Overall, The Gorge is a lot of fun. It’s not a film that wants you to take it incredibly seriously—it’s meant to be fun in the way a romantic action film can be. The dialogue can be cheesy and the romance is of course wildly unbelievable. But really? Who cares. It’s a glorious piece of escapism that we all could use in this day and age.

The Gorge is streaming now on Apple TV+!
