This Must-Watch Maika Monroe Horror-Thriller Is Now on HBO’s Max and it’s Legendary

Longlegs actor Maika Monroe’s star is on the rise. She has appeared in a variety of well-made genre pictures, turning in complex, dynamic performances. Perhaps some of her lasting appeal to horror fans stems from her appreciation for the genre. Unlike a lot of up-and-comers, Monroe isn’t appearing in horror pictures to make a name for herself and move on to more mainstream fare. She genuinely appreciates genre cinema and thinks like a fan.
Monroe initially came onto our collective radar with the indie picture It Follows. The film started in limited release, ultimately expanding to nearly 1,700 theaters at the peak of its theatrical exhibition. The flick pulled in a whopping $23.3 million by the end of that impressive run.

The picture received nearly universal acclaim from critics upon release. It Follows is ‘certified fresh’ on Rotten Tomatoes with a critical approval rating of 95%. Quite a few movie lovers also connected with the flick. It boasts a 3.5/5 rating on Letterboxd, the social network for cinephiles.
Where can I stream It Follows?
If you’re keen to rewatch the picture to see what made It Follows an indie breakthrough success story, I’ve got good news for you. The film is now available to stream on HBO’s Max.
In addition to Monroe, the picture also features appearances by Keir Gilchrist, Daniel Zovatto, Jake Weary, Olivia Luccardi, and Lili Sepe.
David Robert Mitchell helmed the picture and wrote the screenplay. According to IMDb, Mitchell is currently in pre-production on several different films. One of them is a planned sequel to It Follows called They Follow. You can read more on that highly anticipated project right here.
The setup for this Maika Monroe chiller goes as follows:
After carefree teenager Jay (Maika Monroe) sleeps with her new boyfriend, Hugh (Jake Weary), for the first time, she learns that she is the latest recipient of a fatal curse that is passed from victim to victim via sexual intercourse. Death, Jay learns, will creep inexorably toward her as either a friend or a stranger. Jay’s friends don’t believe her seemingly paranoid ravings until they too begin to see the phantom assassins and band together to help her flee or defend herself.
