The Thriller Guillermo del Toro Calls “A stark Western set in a hyperreal LA” is Now Free to Stream

Guillermo del Toro recs

Do you enjoy a gritty heist thriller with a top-notch cast of talented thespians at the top of their game? Are you a fan of auteur filmmaker Guillermo del Toro? If you answered both of those questions in the affirmative, I’ve got a special recommendation for you today. As it turns out, del Toro is a fan of a film that checks all of the aforementioned boxes. How do I know? Because he previously professed his affinity for the flick in question on Twitter (please don’t call it X).

Heat

The Mimic director’s tweet reads: “Film: Heat by Michael Mann. Top three Mann. A film that is part of the lexicon of the medium. A stark Western set in a hyperreal LA.”

Where is Heat available to stream?

Now that’s an endorsement. Although, I’m now left curious as to what del Toro’s other two favorite Michael Mann films are. Never mind that, though. That’s another endeavor for another day. For now, let’s just focus on where you can watch Heat.

You can find Heat streaming across a few different platforms as of the publication of this post. Hulu subscribers can check the flick out on the platform. However, if you don’t currently subscribe to Hulu, you can also scope the pic for free (with ads) on Plex.

Michael Mann wrote and directed Heat. The picture’s exceptional cast includes Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, Tom Sizemore, Diane Venora, Amy Brenneman, Ashley Judd, Mykelti Williamson, Wes Studi, Ted Levine, Jon Voight, Natalie Portman, and Val Kilmer.

The setup for this Guillermo del Toro-approved crime thriller goes as follows:

Master criminal Neil McCauley (De Niro) is trying to control the rogue actions of one of his men, while also planning one last big heist before retiring. Meanwhile, Lieutenant Hanna (Pacino) attempts to track down McCauley as he deals with the chaos in his own life, including the infidelity of his wife (Venora) and the mental health of his stepdaughter (Portman). McCauley and Hanna discover mutual respect, even as they try to thwart each other’s plans.

That is everything that we have for you, for the time being, dear reader.
