Disturbing Domestic Horror Movie that Mike Flanagan Recommends is Now Free to Stream

If you’re put off by creepy kids in horror films, you may want to sit this one out, dear reader. We are back with another recommendation to share from filmmaker Mike Flanagan. But take note that the pick in question features a double dose of eerie youngsters at the forefront. Yikes! The film of which I speak is none other than Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala’s Goodnight Mommy.
For the sake of clarity, we are discussing the 2014 Austrian original, not the ill-fated Amazon Studios reboot that bowed in 2022.

Flanagan, who we all know has impeccable taste, added the 2014 film to a Letterboxd list showcasing his favorite horror pictures of all time. Nice work, Mike.
Flanagan is far from the only fan of this chilling effort. The flick is ‘certified fresh’ on Rotten Tomatoes with a critical approval rating of 85%. The PopcornMeter (formerly known as the audience score) is also favorable, coming in at a respectable 66%.
Severin Fiala and Veronika Franz co-wrote the film together, in addition to co-directing the project.
Fun fact: Franz and Fiala are a filmmaking duo who also happen to be biologically related. Fiala is Franz’s nephew. I love seeing unexpected creative pairings like that. And I love to witness the horror genre bringing families closer together. Very cool.
Where is this Mike Flanagan-endorsed chiller available to watch?
I imagine that all this talk of Goodnight Mommy has you eager to check the film out for yourself, no? If you’re chomping at the bit to take a ride with a couple of creepy rug rats and their mysterious mother figure, you can do just that at your leisure. Goodnight Mommy is streaming on Tubi (for free, with ads) as of the publication of this post.
The setup for Goodnight Mommy goes as follows:
Twin boys who do everything together, from collecting beetles to feeding stray cats, welcome their mother home after her reconstructive surgery. But with her face wrapped in bandages, and her demeanor distant, they grow suspicious of her identity.
That is absolutely everything that we have for you at present.
