One of the Most Disturbing Movies Ever Made is Now Streaming For Free

In my time, I’ve seen a disturbing movie or two. Horror serves many purposes, and sometimes, I’m keener on just relaxing and disconnecting than I am on confronting the longstanding terrors of our world. Movies like The Treatment or I Saw the Devil are certainly worth watching, but they’re not casual moviegoing experiences. Even the recently released The Rule of Jenny Pen (a fantastic movie, by the way) left me feeling deflated.
Still, I understand the impulse to seek out the most disturbing movies imaginable. Sometimes, the best horror proves unshakable. Maybe not appropriate for a family movie night, but worthwhile in the wider history of horror movies and their capacity to instill existential fear. Luckily, one of the most terrifying and disturbing movies ever made is streaming free, and there’s a chance it’s one you’ve missed. Can you spy him deep within?
Matthew Holness’ Possum is one of the most accomplished feature debuts I’ve ever seen. It’s got everything a fantastic horror movie should have. Shattering scares, strong performances (Sean Harris is excellent), grim material, and a really nifty central visual. If you’re afraid of either puppets or spiders, Possum is likely going to prove the stuff of absolute nightmares.
Per Tubi: The tortured childhood of a disgraced puppeteer comes back to haunt him when he returns home to his diabolical stepfather and an old coping device.
With the film streaming free now on Tubi, I encourage you to check Possum out. Be warned; it’s not an easy watch. The subject matter is dark, and Holness doesn’t shy away from some pretty troubling subtext. Possum was a critical success, however, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best-reviewed horror movies of the 2010s.

Even filmmaker Mike Flanagan is a fan, writing:
“Matthew Holness’ viciously bleak tone poem is one of the most unsettling horror films I’ve ever seen. The atmosphere of dread he creates is so thick it actually seeps into you as you view it, and you feel … well, you feel stained by the time you reach its conclusion. Featuring a tour-de-force performance by Sean Harris and some of the most nightmare-inducing imagery I’ve ever seen in an indie horror film — Holness is a force to be reckoned with.”
What do you think? Any plans to check out Possum on Tubi? If you do, be certain to let me know whether it’s ruined your life like it did mine (in a good way) over on Twitter @Chadiscollins.
