Our homes are a sacred space. They represent our escape, a safe haven from the cruel world. That distinction is a key reason why haunted house films have the potential to be properly terrifying. If you’re not safe in your own home, where are you safe? Yes, films from that genre often resonate in a special way for me. Speaking of, one haunted house picture in particular really resonated with Stephen King. So much so that the author counts it as one of his all-time favorite horror movies.

In 2017, BFI asked King to name his favorite horror films. Being a good-natured fellow, King did just that. Among his choices was The Changeling. The author told BFI: “For supernatural horror, I like Peter Medak’s film The Changeling, starring George C. Scott in perhaps his last great screen role. There are no monsters bursting from chests; just a child’s ball bouncing down a flight of stairs was enough to scare the daylights out of me.”

Where is The Changeling available to watch?

If you’re on the hunt for an eerie supernatural horror film dripping with atmosphere, you can stream The Changeling (free with ads) on Tubi as of the publication of this post.

Peter Medak directed the 1980 film from a script written by William Gray and Diana Maddox. Playwright Russell Hunter (who gets a ‘story by’ credit) came up with the idea while he was living at the (allegedly haunted) Henry Treat Rogers mansion in Denver.

The film stars George C. Scott, Trish Van Devere, Melvyn Douglas, John Colicos, Jean Marsh, Helen Burns, and Madeleine Sherwood.

The setup for this atmospheric horror thriller favored by Stephen King is this:

Composer John Russell (George C. Scott) is vacationing with his family when a car accident kills his wife and daughter. Distraught with grief, Russell leaves his home in New York City for a giant, secluded house near Seattle. Soon Russell starts to feel the presence of a ghost, a boy who drowned in the bathtub there. Russell seeks the assistance of Claire Norman (Trish Van Devere), who led him to the house initially, in uncovering the secrets of the boy’s death.

That is absolutely everything that were have for you at present.
