Netflix Will Soon Lose a Brutal Thriller Mike Flanagan Calls “Harrowing and Brilliant”

I have a love/hate relationship with streaming. I love that I can sometimes find films I want to watch available on platforms to which I subscribe. I hate that streamers constantly mix up their lineup, so what’s here today is gone tomorrow. On that note, Netflix is gearing up to drop an iconic horror thriller from the platform favored by Mike Flanagan.
That’s right, dear reader. Netflix will vanquish Oldboy before the end of the month. Have you seen the film? If not, you have until March 24th to check it out via Netflix.

How does Mike Flanagan factor into all of this? Well, the Absentia director is a massive fan of the film. How do I know? I know because he took to Letterboxd to pen a rave review expressing his undying appreciation for the flick.
His critique reads (in part): “There isn’t much to be said about Oldboy that hasn’t already been said – it is a harrowing, brilliant, adrenalized entry in Park’s extraordinary filmography, and tends to be most people’s introduction to the filmmaker.”
For the uninitiated, Oldboy is part of Park Chan-wook’s ‘revenge trilogy.’ The three-film series consists of Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, Lady Vengeance, and, of course, Oldboy.
In addition to helming, Park Chan-wook co-wrote the screen treatment for the film with Hwang Jo-yun, Lim Jun-hyung.
The film was a hit with movie lovers and critics alike. Its global box office grossed $17,052,444 USD, roughly three times the ill-fated English-language remake’s.
The setup for this Mike Flanagan-endorsed horror thriller on Netflix goes like this:
Dae-Su is an obnoxious drunk bailed from the police station yet again by a friend. However, he’s abducted from the street and wakes up in a cell, where he remains for the next 15 years, drugged unconscious when human contact is unavoidable, otherwise with only the television as company. And then, suddenly released, he is invited to track down his jailor with a denouement that is simply stunning.
Well, that is just about everything we have for you, for now. Stay tuned to Dread Central shortly for more life-enhancing updates on which films are coming and going from your favorite streaming platforms. If you fancy keeping up with me on social media, you can find me on Threads @FunWithHorror.
