Eliza Dushku and Kevin Tancharoen Talk The Gable 5

Following the success of Mortal Kombat: Legacy and Mortal Kombat: Legacy II, Kevin Tancharoen is once again delivering high quality scripted programming to the Machinima audience.
Here’s the shady skinny: Government-funded scientist Professor Gable unearths five people who have special gifts and seem to be a portent in the next evolutionary step for mankind. If he can harness the source of their gifts, he could use them for the good of the world… or for evil.
Eliza Dushku (“Angel,” “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”) plays an unwitting pawn in this nefarious program in the action-packed pilot which debuted yesterday. Basically, she kicks a lot of ass as she tries to make sense of what is happening to her. (It reminded me a little bit, in spirit anyway, of the short-lived Dushku television series “Dollhouse.”)
Tancharoen describes The Gable 5 as “a sci-fi, futuristic version of The Truman Show.” I had to call him on that one when we talked because The Gable 5 is not a comedy at all! He laughed and said, “Well, the reason I said that is the victims are put into a situation in which they do not know they are being watched.”
When I asked Dushku how web series have evolved from basically a pariah to the cutting edge, she said it’s because they are “bigger, better, faster – more.” She added, “Being able to access your audience so directly is a major plus. And now that producers are catching on to that, they are putting more behind web series. They’re feeling more confident.”
Tancharoen is definitely feeling confident about the medium. When I asked him how he managed to make a web series look better than most big screen blockbusters, he said, “For me, I never really treat it any differently when shooting. With that said, making content quote-unquote ‘for the web’ is so vague because I watch a lot of web videos and series on my Apple television so I watch it on my normal TV, and I know a lot of other people do too.”
Dushku, for one, was on board right away. “I was psyched to hear Machinima was producing this; I’m a fan of their epic artistry and also Kevin and his team. The story is thought-provoking, it’s extremely intelligent, and it poses this universal question of ‘Where are we going? And where are we currently?’ as far as science mixed with psychology – can we control the outcome? Whether or not we can control certain variables and tweak the outcome… That’s something everybody has pondered.”
Tancharoen, too, loves “the science of it all. For this we actually did consult with a scientist who came with some accurate terminology; obviously we took it cinematically and took some creative license, but I always like finding some kind of scientific back and then tweaking it out so it’s a little more entertaining.”
As for the future of The Gable 5, Dushku says you have to tune in! “We don’t know where or how the show is moving forward at this point – if the fans like it, we’d love to do more.”
The Gable 5 is airing on Machinima Prime RIGHT NOW. Check out the pilot/first episode below.
