‘The Ugly Stepsister’ Trailer Serves Up A Hellish Look At Unrealistic Beauty Standards

Coming soon to theaters from IFC Films and Shudder is the gnarly and confronting The Ugly Stepsister. In her feature directorial debut, writer and director Emilie Blichfeldt blends a well-loved fairy tale with body horror to provide a very different perspective on love, beauty, and what it means to succeed in society.
Read the full synopsis below:
A sinister twist on the classic Cinderella story, The Ugly Stepsister follows Elvira as she prepares to earn the prince’s affection at any cost. In a kingdom where beauty is a brutal business, Elvira will compete with the beautiful and enchanting Agnes to become the belle of the ball.
Watch the nasty official trailer:
Blichfeldt draws from the beloved version of Cinderella we all know, as well as the Brothers Grimm’s version, which is quite darker than the Disney-fied version most of us are familiar with. Their version involves cutting apart feet and eyes being pecked out, so keep that in the back of your mind as you prepare for the horror of The Ugly Stepsister.
In his review of the film out of Sundance 2025, Dread Central’s Josh Korngut wrote,
“The Ugly Stepsister, a nightmarish yet darkly comedic fairytale reimagining, serves up Sam Raimi-levels of gut-wrenching mayhem alongside a sharply macabre critique of the brutal beauty standards imposed on women.”
Lea Myren, Thea Sofie Loch Næss, Ane Dahl Torp, and Flo Fagerli star in the film.
The Ugly Stepsister comes to theaters on April 18, 2025.
